About Ngā Pakanga

Why this project exists

Aotearoa New Zealand's landscapes carry the history of the Musket Wars and the New Zealand Wars — battles, pā, people and turning points that are easy to drive past without knowing they happened. Ngā Pakanga puts those places on an interactive map so travellers, students and anyone curious can discover the history connected to the places they visit.

How the content is researched

Every place on the map is built from published historical sources. Each record carries a verification status — verified, review needed, or source needed — and we never invent events, dates, people or sources. Where a location is approximate or unconfirmed, the page says so plainly rather than presenting a guess as fact.

Sources and references

Each place page lists the sources behind its story — including NZHistory, Te Ara, the Heritage New Zealand list, the Waitangi Tribunal and published histories. Sources are shown on each place so you can read further and check our work.

Report a correction

If you believe something on the map is wrong — a date, a location, a name, a detail of what happened — we want to know. Email hello@example.com with the place and what you believe needs correcting, and we'll review it against the sources.
