At dawn on 16 May 1846, Te Mamaku of Ngāti Hāua-te-rangi led around 200 Whanganui fighters, in support of Ngāti Rangatahi and Te Rangihaeata, in an attack on a British military stockade at Boulcott's Farm in the Hutt Valley. Six soldiers were killed outright and two more later died of their wounds — eight dead in total — during escalating conflict over disputed land purchases.
