What happened here?
A quarrel among high-born women connected to rival Ngāpuhi hapū — including women living with the trader W.D. Brind — escalated into fighting on Kororāreka beach between northern hapū led by Ururoa and southern hapū led by Kiwikiwi. Up to 100 people were killed or wounded before missionaries, including Henry Williams, brokered peace, though tension flared intermittently for years afterwards.
