What happened here?
On 5 September 1821, Hongi Hika's 2,000-strong, musket-armed taua stormed the Ngāti Pāoa pā of Mauinaina and Mokoia on the Tāmaki River, killing and enslaving hundreds. The Tāmaki isthmus was left largely depopulated for years afterwards as Ngāti Pāoa sought refuge elsewhere.
