What happened here?

About 1,600 volunteers and Armed Constabulary entered a village that met them with singing children and offered food. Much of the peaceful settlement was destroyed, and its leaders Te Whiti and Tohu were held for 16 months without trial. Parihaka remains a lasting symbol of non-violent resistance.
