What happened here?

In December 1836, Ngāti Tama chief Te Pūoho, after an epic march down the West Coast and over Haast Pass, captured a small group of Ngāi Tahu at their kāinga at Tūturau in Southland. Three days later he was shot dead at dawn by two Ngāi Tahu warriors, and the Ngāi Tahu leader Tūhawaiki then entered the kāinga unopposed.
