What happened here?

One of the early engagements of the Taranaki war, fought around Kaipopo pā and the Waireka Stream near Ōmata, south of New Plymouth. Settler accounts claimed a victory; the Waitangi Tribunal (1996) regarded it as a Māori success. The militia's role became part of settler legend.
