What happened
The 'bat's nest' — a deeply bunkered pā built to withstand artillery — was entered on Sunday 11 January 1846, when only Kawiti and about a dozen men remained inside. One common explanation is that most defenders were at Christian worship, but this remains a theory. Both sides claimed the outcome, and many consider it drawn.
